1 : to cover or fill (something) with soft material especially to protect it or make it more comfortable

He padded the inside of the box with cloth and crumpled newspaper.

She used a cushion to pad the bench.

2 : to make (something) larger, longer, or more attractive by adding things that are unnecessary, unimportant, or false

She padded (out) her speech with quotes from local citizens.

He hoped that by padding his résumé his lack of experience would be overlooked.

3 US : to dishonestly add more charges to (a bill) in order to collect more money than is owed

He padded the bill he sent to the company for his consulting work.
